VITAL Libraries: 04M505

The VITAL Libraries grant program is a substantial grant award that takes NYC public school libraries to the next level. VITAL stands for Vital, Instructional, Transformative, Accessible, Learning, Libraries.

Edward A. Reynolds Transfer High School

The library at the Edward A. Reynolds Transfer High School is a safe, supportive, comfortable, and alternative space for students who are undercredited and overaged. The librarian partners with all academic departments for interdisciplinary learning to create and share resources that are helpful for the teachers' curriculum planning. As dictated by the needs of the school community, the librarian offers programming during lunch and before and after school to support learning and community building. The librarian also teaches courses related to information and media literacy.

The VITAL grant will help transfer high school students engage more in school, and utilize materials that are of interest to support overall literacy in all disciplines. Additionally, adding resources to the collection that support home language literacy will help newly arrived students make more academic progress. Reconfiguring the space with new furniture and technology will support all students in continuing their studies in the library.
