Newly Assigned Institute: Session 1

This guide is designed to support a librarian or teacher RECENTLY (first or second year) assigned to the library.

A Process for Using the Mini Alignments

The Mini Alignments are one-to-one alignments between the skills in the Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) and the Following Common Core Standards:

  • Reading Informational Text Standards 1 and 10 for all grades
  • Writing Standard 2 for grades K-2
  • Writing Standard 1 for grades 3-12

How to Use the Mini Alignments:  A Process

  1. Print the Mini Alignment for the grade you are interested in working with.
  2. For each of the IFC skills listed, answer the question:  why does this skill need to be taught in order to meet the Common Core Standard to which it is aligned?
  3. Make note of any IFC skill that has an assessment.
  4. Locate the IFC assessment(s).
  5. Reach out to collaboratively plan lessons to teach the IFC skills.  It will help if you bring the alignment and the assessment(s) with you to demonstrate and verbalize for colleagues why the skill(s) need to be taught to meet the Common Core Standard to which they are aligned.
  6. Plan and teach the lessons.
  7. Gather a sampling of four pieces of student work from each lesson:  one that is below standard, one that is approaching standard, one that meets the standard and one that exceeds it.  Annotate these and add them to your portfolio with the lesson.
