Description, Goals, Intended Outcomes: 

Using iPads as well as pencil and paper, 7th graders compare and contrast a video and an article about choosing paper or plastic bags when shopping.  They then read an additional article about next steps for solving the plastic crisis and create an informational “poster” using Pic Collage.

The goal of this project is to address Common Core Standards while using Internet news articles, multimedia, iPads, and a free app.

Process to Develop and Implement this Project:

I started searching for free apps on the iPad that allowed students to create a product.  Then I chose the topic that I wanted to cover which was the environment.  I found the perfect video on the NBC Learn site.  I searched for complementary articles using my favorite kids news site, DOGONEWS.  I consulted the Common Core Standards, then began designing the project.

Budget:  No additional money was spent.  The school already owned a class set of iPads and a subscription to NBC Learn.

Timeline:  This project can be completed in 2 to 3 periods, depending upon the level of the students.

Evidence of Outcomes, Possible Adaptations, Lessons Learned:

This project can be done on regular PCs or laptops using other multimedia tools, like One True Media.

Common Core State Standard(s) addressed:

Reading Standards for Informational Text GRADE 7

7. Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium’s portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words).

8. Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

Information Fluency Continuum (IFC) Skill(s) addressed:

Evaluates quality of electronic and print information for usefulness, currency, authority, and accuracy.

Uses interactive multimedia tools to exchange data collected and to learn curricular concepts by communicating with peers, experts, and other audiences.
