Reading the Rainbow: Supporting LGBTQ Students and Allies through Books

Concurrent Session I: Auditorium

For many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students in K-12 schools, books can be a mirror, providing a reflection of their own identity. For other students, LGBTQ literature can be a window that allows them to see a world outside of their own. And pairing this literature with an LGBTQ author coming into the classroom allows students to experience these books on a different level. This panel will focus on experiences of a variety of school staff, program staff, and an author in the Lambda Literary and NYC Department of Education LGBTQ Writers in Schools program. Attendees will walk away with best practices around LGBTQ literature and author visits in a K-12 school setting.
